Posted on Monday, February 24, 2020

Mill Hill has several excellent primary schools, which is partially why families are so keen to move there. If you’re looking for a home in Mill Hill, here’s a guide to the best schools, and some information about their catchment areas.

Mill Hill primary schools – the top five

The following schools are among the best in Mill Hill, and are usually oversubscribed.

Northway School

General information:

Northway School is situated on The Fairway, and accepts pupils aged 4 to 11. It specialises in providing a quality education for students with special needs, and was awarded ‘Outstanding’ in its most recent Ofsted report. All admissions are handled by the London Borough of Barnet SEN team.

Catchment area:

Any of the roads around The Fairway (near Barnet Way) are ideal. The Fairway itself has some pleasant 1930s properties (some which have been sub-divided, offering reasonably priced flats for as little as £400,000). There are some spacious detached properties in locations like Fernside Avenue for around £600,000, and some semi-detached homes with driveways and gardens on Ellesemere Road, which again, are priced at £600,000.

Courtland School

General information:

This high-performing school was also rated ‘outstanding’ in its Ofsted report, and takes students aged 4 to 11. It’s a community school, located on Courtland Avenue, and currently has just over 200 pupils.  If you’d like to send your child here, you’ll need to get in touch with the local council’s primary schools admissions team.

Catchment area:

Courtland School is relatively close to Northway School (on the other side of Barnet Way). There are plenty of pleasant roads in the catchment area, such as Bedford Road, which has some characterful semi-detached homes (1920s) for just over £700,000. Tree-lined Glenwood Road is particularly sought-after, and has attractive semi-detached properties for £800,000.

Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School

General information:

This Jewish-faith voluntary-aided school can be found on Hale Lane. It accepts students aged 3 to 11, and is another establishment that was given an Ofsted ‘outstanding’ rating. As might be expected, the school gives priority to those who are practicing Jews.

Catchment area:

There are plenty of appealing properties in this catchment area, such as the sizeable family homes on Hale Lane itself, which go for approximately £800,000. The smaller roads, such as Beechwood Close, also have some lovely detached 1920s homes for between £800-£900,000. Those on a budget should explore the maisonettes and apartments on offer in this area, which offer good living dimensions for an affordable price. Expect to pay between £500-£600,000.

The Orion Primary School

General information:

The Orion Primary School is a large establishment, with approximately 1,000 students. It’s a community school (located on Grahame Park Way), and accepts pupils from the age of 2 to 11. There are 120 places available for prospective students, and applications must be made with the local council.

Catchment area:

This school has the advantage of being next to Woodcroft Park, which makes it an even more desirable area. Woodcroft Avenue is not only close to the park, but also has some beautiful 1920s semi-detached properties for around £700,000. Alternatively, those looking for something more moderately priced might appreciate the modern terraced properties in locations like Field Mead. These go for as little as £300,000.

St Paul’s CofE Primary School

General information:

This popular school is another highly rated establishment, located on The Ridgeway. It’s voluntary-aided and gives priority to families that actively practice the Christian faith. All admissions are handled by the local council.

Catchment area:

If you like luxurious living, look for a property in The Ridgeway itself. Some of the properties are over £1million, and come with sweeping driveways, expansive gardens, and plenty of bedrooms. Properties in Mill Hill village are also desirable, but again, come at a high price-tag (sometimes several million). Although this area is dominated by high-end homes, there are a few apartments in sub-divided houses, which are cheaper to buy.
