A Tenant’s Guide to Finchley Property

Posted on Friday, October 23, 2020

Finchley is a popular location for tenants. Its peaceful streets and local amenities are a major draw, as are the multiple tube stations, taking residents into Central London in a matter of minutes.

If you’re thinking of renting in Finchley, this guide will tell you all you need to know about the types of property on offer, and the best areas to live in.

Finchley – What sort of property?

There’s a wide range of properties available in this area, with something to suit every budget.

Detached houses

Large families will appreciate the detached homes on the market, which usually come with plenty of living space, multiple bedrooms, and gardens too. Many of these properties also offer convenient proximity to a station, or green space, such as Windsor Open Space. Anticipate paying anything from £3,000 to £7,000 a month for a house like this.

Apartments

Young professionals are likely to be drawn to the apartments, which offer real value for money (costing anything from £1,000 to £2,000 per month, on average). Some are situated in purpose-built blocks and come with use of the communal amenities such as a gym, shared gardens and parking.

Others are in converted period properties which are great for those that love original features. For example, there are some great turn-of-the-century semi-detached homes that have been divided into flats, and some Edwardian and Victorian terraces too.

Shared rooms

If you’re working to a budget, a room in a shared house is another appealing option. These often have all bills included and give tenants the chance to enjoy living in a great location without paying too much for it. Some rooms can even be rented for as little as £550 a month.

Where to start looking?

Finchley Central

The area around Finchley Central station is understandably popular with tenants. However, there’s more here than just a convenient transport link – the roads nearby have plenty of amenities for locals, such as supermarkets, convenience stores and take-away restaurants.

The streets closest to the station are mostly dominated by modern flats and apartments in converted houses, however, if you venture further out to roads such as Clifton Avenue, you’ll find a few attractive period homes to rent.

Woodside Park

Woodside Park also has its own train station and the added bonus of being close to Woodridge Nature Reserve which is a tranquil place to spend an afternoon. Most of the apartments in this area are situated around Woodside Park Road or High Road – an arterial road that makes it easy for commuters to reach the A1 or the North Circular.

North Finchley

North Finchley is home to several affordable apartments and caters well for its residents with plenty of local shops and a Sainsburys supermarket. St Michael’s Catholic Grammar School is also in this area, which is something that appeals to families.

To be in the centre of the action, look in the area where Ballards Lane intersects with High Road, or if you’re looking for a house rather than a flat, there are some excellent semi-detached homes further along Woodhouse Road.

West Finchley

West Finchley is another area with its own tube station, which takes commuters to King’s Cross in around twenty minutes. It’s home to a golf club, a yoga centre and a park and it’s only a short walk to North Finchley’s amenities. As such, it’s a great spot for tenants.

If you’re searching for a family house to rent, the streets surrounding the station are a good place to start looking. Focus on locations like Courthouse Gardens or West Avenue or if you’re looking for something super-sized, try roads such as Finchley Way or Westbury Road.

Alternatively there are plenty of flats to choose from in the roads leading off Ballards Lane.
